The Movement is a project perpetuated by random acts of kindness, and was designed to encourage you to simply do nice things for others. Today I was taking my garbage out and I noticed that my neighbor had his garbage sitting outside of his door, so I just scooped it up to save him the trip!
I haven't talked to my family in a long time and last night I got a call from my mom and was actually able to talk to my whole family. I was on the phone for almost an hour. It was just nice to see that they still care and that they were making plans already for doing something the next time I go home.
So there is this really nice lady that works in my office. I've only spoken to her a few times, but every time I’ve spoken with her it just made my day. I wanted to tell her that, so I sent her an anonymous thank you card. Hopefully it will make her day.
My roommate and I have had some slight disagreements lately--nothing big, just who didn't refill the ice tray type of things. I decided to make dinner for her and her boyfriend today. It felt really good to serve them and they were grateful to not have to eat frozen dinners again.
I attend Hall Government on a weekly basis and I have noticed that our treasurer seems to be going well above his call of duty in helping with homecoming. To help show him how much his effort means to us, I left him a card for him to get at his 4am desk shift.
I wrote a note to a professor who is not always shown how much the students appreciate him. It was a simple, genuine gesture to make someone's day brighter.
This past week was homecoming at my university & the rest of the women in my sorority house left the house looking like a disaster. Even though I did not make the mess I vacuumed the formal living room & hallway so that when alumni & parents came to visit the house would look clean. A few women saw me clean it, but I am not going to tell anyone else who did it. It got cleaned & that's all that matters.
We were doing this group clean-up, but everyone had a special area. One area did not have the right supplies they were not able to clean up anything. When our group was done, we gave them all of our extra supplies!
This is cool...I sent an email to one of my old teachers to tell her that her class from 3 years ago really helped me out this year so far.
So a couple of weeks ago I wanted breakfast for dinner. I told my friend and he volunteered to cook. So I figured it would only be right if I washed the dishes. While running his garbage disposal I noticed a clanking sound. So I proceeded to clean it out for him. I found all types of squishy food particles and random bits of some hard plastic object. It was gross to say the least! But by the time I finished his disposal was in order. Yea!!! :)
I work in an office where we each take a night of work a week, we just call it "manning the phone." It was a co-worker's birthday the other day and he was supposed to be on duty, but I snuck into the office early and took the phone and I left him a note saying he should go enjoy his birthday!
I was waiting in line to pay for my lunch today. The line wasn't terribly long at all, but an extra worker came up and took me to another register! It was such a pleasant surprise.
So, a week ago it was extremely windy outside and a worker that puts food in the vending machines had his hat fly away as well as some of the snacks in his box. He ran after the hat and I got the chips and such for him. The vendor seemed pretty happy I was helping.
Then while I was coming inside another person needed help carrying some of her things inside because the wind was too strong for her to hold onto the stuff. I helped out, no big. I guess I just really like helping people.
My friend and I went to visit an old college friend and her husband for a long weekend. On the last night we all went out to eat. My friend and I agreed to pay for the couple's meal. When the check came my friend and I grabbed the check and fought the couple against paying for the meal.
I bought brunch for a friend today. :)
A couple of weeks ago I went grocery shopping at ALDI. It was cold and rainy, just and overall crabby day. It should be noted that if you want to use a grocery cart at ALDI, you have to pay 25 cents. Well as I began to desperately search for a quarter in the rain, a nice lady gave me her cart, so I could retreat from the elements. Her kindness made me smile.
Tonight while I was going through the drive-thru at McDonalds to pick up a milkshake for a friend the person in car in front of me paid for it. Thank you to whom ever that was in front of me.
one of the ladies in the office got a call about a package of mine floating around and she tracked it down, kept it in her office, and called me special so i could pick it up. it was really nice.
about three weeks ago I was walking with a friend during the homecoming parade. about half way through the procession he realizes he doesn't have his keys. of course this was not a new experience for him. but there was a great concern, that this time, he'd lost them on the street. we're talking house, car, office, building, life on a keychain... gone in an instant. yikes 8l !!
so after the parade was over I walked with him, re-tracing our steps in search of these keys. after some rationalization we concluded that he'd probably locked them in his apartment again. so as we walked back home we had a very pleasant conversation. I decided to fix us lunch as he waited for the people to come unlock his door. at the end of the ordeal we learned that his keys were in fact locked in his apartment. however, while searching for them we had the opportunity to chat and relax. it was a very pleasant exchange, and he was very grateful for the company.
My colleagues and I had a party last week that I could not attend and one of them picked up my gift for me. Not only was that sweet in and of itself, but she told me that everyone had bags taped to the wall that people could write positive notes to each other. The gift held many little treasures of kind words and thoughts that made a rough week a little brighter.
My car ran out of gas today--when my friend and I walked to the nearest gas station to purchase a gas canteen and gas, the clerk gave us a half filled canteen. I was so grateful to not half to buy the canteen!!! We filled up the car with the little free gas from the canteen and then drove to the gas station to top off my tank. I refilled the canteen as well and gave it back to the clerk. I hope someone else is as blessed as I was today with that free gas.
Someone paid for my lunch at the Bistro last week! Thanks to whoever that was!
I recieved one of these cards with a heartfelt message on the back telling me how they appreciate my work. It just made my day!
last week I did Stuff The Bus on campus, it's nice to think that the work I did that day will help out a family who really needs it.
I challenged my two teen boys to take on a random act of kindness at school. I gave them 1.00 and said have an icecream but you need to find someone that you have never would have talked to and give them one as well. I came home that night and asked how it went. My youngest said it was odd but felt good to do my oldest said the boy actually thought he did something to the icecream. I hope that this makes my boys think about the way they treat others. I actually stopped in at Fareway and asked the clerk to take 10.00 off the next persons groceries for me. What a great feeling it is just to know that I have helped someone even if it was just for a breif moment. :o)
I was at Starbucks with my family today and I wasn't really in the mood to get anything, so I didn't. When the guy behind the counter served up my family members' drinks, he gave me a mini one and said he felt bad that I didn't get to partake in the fun. It made me smile!
God bless those Starbucks employees! I was in a Starbucks in Manhattan yesterday, and I asked the cashier what makes the Signature Hot Chocolate so special. He felt a description couldn't do it justice so he made me one on the house! He topped it off with a little whipped cream and caramel. IT WAS DELICIOUS!!!!! It was such a special treat. I wanted something to warm me up from the cold; but that warm feeling went beyond the hot cocoa in the cup. Good deeds really do make a difference.
So my friend and I went to see a show on broadway this week. We wanted to look nice for the show so we dressed up a little bit. After leaving the show we proceeded to get a bite to eat. As I was walking down the stairs to the subway terminal the heel of my shoe clipped the final stair and I feel right down on my knees. I looked as if I was kneeling down to pray... ; D
There was a man walking right behind. Instead of walking around me, he just picked me up and helped me back on me feet. Then he brushed the dirt of my knees! It happened so fast i didn't know what was happening. One second I was down, the next I was up getting my jeans brushed off as I walked away. The gentleman just helped me out, then kept on his way... How nice was that!
It's COLD outside! A very good friend of my did a very thoughtful thing that touched my heart...
I was fortunate enough to be pleasantly surprised with a very thoughtful gift. I am not from the midwestern region, and am not accustomed to the weather here just yet. Recently a friend gave me a winter-weather survival pack...from fancy mittens to hot cocoa! How cool is that!?!? I'm not surprised very often, and this gift was so thoughtful, it really made me happy. It's amazing how impactful a simple act of kindness can be.
So a couple of people picked some things up for me, and I owed them each 5 bucks. My friend overheard me acknowledging those debts, and he just paid them for me right on the spot. He then essentially told me to pay it forward. I've been infected with kindness so.... it's time to start an epidemic! :D
GAME ON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I just received an email full of useful information from a friend. She didn't have to share that info with me. This simple act will save me a few minutes, and she turned a potentially cumbersome task into an effortless one.
Thanks
Today I received the nicest thank you card for always smiling at someone and making their day. I've been having a rough time at work thinking I'm not nice and struggling to be nicer, but it's nice to know that maybe I'm not as horrible as I thought :)
Over Thanksgiving break my grandpa stole my car keys and filled my tank up the morning before I had to leave to go back to school. It was a pleasant surprise to get in the car that day and realize that I didn't need to stop by the gas station before getting on the road.
I work in an environment where I help a lot of people with various computer problems. Most of the time people never say thank you for helping and often times they get mad when I can't fix their problem. I help a very nice girl try to recover a file. She was very pleasant to help. A refreshing change. Well I received a thank you card in the mail from her expressing her thankfulness towards me for helping when others didn't put forth the effort. It was very nice and motivates me to work harder to help people. Thank you for the card.
Last week a group of colleagues and I went out for lunch and one of them bought mine for me. Then another had to go cash a check to pay for hers. That's when I realized I had cash on me! So I literally paid it foward. Since someone bought lunch for me, I bought lunch for her. :) It was awesome!!
One of the administrative assistants in the office e-mailed everyone in our department and told us to stop by to pick out a little trinket from her "Sweets Tree." She let everyone pick out a little glass ornament for the holidays and to thank us for being us! It was so sweet and exciting.
I was getting a soda from a nearby vending machine. Behind me were three individuals who were in light conversation slash studying. I said hello to the team, gave a pretty solid smile, got my soda, and left. Walking away, I put my wallet back in my pocket and felt the mass of business cards I had received earlier that day. I was away from the scene but I thought to myself, I could have offered to buy them a soda just for the heck of it. Might have made their night!
Point of the story... I thought I was good at doing random nice things at people. And it isn't that I'm not good or not proud of what I've done, but it really brought to my attention the things we just don't think about all the time. There is so much more good that can be done!
Thanks for helping me to open my eyes. I'm proud to start my journey with The Movement!!! Game on.
:0)
I'm a house mom at a sorority house. Each girl in the house has her own duty to keep the house clean, but this morning the kitchen was a complete disaster. Knowing it's finals week and the girls are stressed out, I cleaned the kitchen better than it's been cleaned in weeks. I didn't complain at all... I was happy to help!
I was buying something today and the cashier asked if I had any coupons and I said I did not. To my surprise, she reached under the register, pulled out a coupon and scanned it in for me! Surprise discount! It was so nice of her!
I sent little spring wishes to some blogging friends with a little treat enclosed.
While I was moving in yesterday, there was one student who was super helpful in holding the door open for me whenever I was carrying a whole bunch of stuff. I thought he was done moving out and then I was walking up to the building with more stuff and he hopped out of a slowing mini van, ran to open thedoor for me, and then got back in the van! Such a nice guy, right?
Yesterday a friend and I were driving back from another friend's wedding when hunger set in so we stopped at a Subway right off I-80 in the middle of nowhere Iowa. There was a friendly man from Louisiana standing ahead of us in line who started a conversation with us. He was very friendly and funny. Well after he ordered his food he put a $10 bill on the counter and told the cashier it was to pay for my friend, Sarah's and my lunches! How incredibly nice! So I'm excited to pass that $10 on to someone else the next time I eat. :)
Thanks, Mr. Louisiana!
